Treatment of the month: Watsu water massage - 50 minutes of blissful suspension
06 May 2016
Warm, weightless and hushed, the cocoon of Watsu water massage is probably the closest to a total state of suspension you will achieve whilst inside earth’s gravity field and outside of the womb.
One of Thermae Bath Spa’s four signature massages, Watsu transports the body back to a state of natural suspension, gently buoyed by the therapist’s guiding hands and a few unobtrusive floats in the naturally warm mineral-rich waters of Thermae Bath Spa’s Hot Bath.
The therapist’s touch is so light that the sensation of the thermal water takes mainstage, its gentle and constant touch heightened by a series of harmonious stretches, movements, acupressure and Shiatsu massage.
The only requirement of you during this light, flowing treatment is to relax completely and to hand over responsibility to the therapist, whom ensures your face remains comfortably supported above water for the entire session.
You don’t have to be a strong swimmer to enjoy this treatment, or even be able to swim for that matter – the treatment takes place in a level pool with a comfortable depth, and you will be supported by floats and the therapist for the duration.
The water envelops and supports your body in a way impossible to achieve on land, eradicating pressure on joints and the spine and encouraging total relaxation. In line with the weightlessness of the massage, you will be asked to remove any hair ties or wristbands, to ensure you are as detached as possible from the physical weight and trappings of day to day life.
Unlike a customary massage, with a Watsu the masseuse isn’t restricted to one side of the body at a time, and as a result they need to give you very little verbal direction during the entire session. This means you can totally give your mind and body over to the sweeping movements, reflexologies and sensations taking place.
The therapist alternatively massages your hands, feet, arms, legs, and head, keeping your head and body securely but lightly supported. You are pulled, pushed, rocked, stretched and slowly swung through the water to give the impression of swimming without movement, so that every limb feels light and stretched.
What to expect from your first Watsu at the Hot Bath:
You will be led into the warm, mineral-rich water of the Hot Bath up to standing depth by the therapist. Your therapist will attach comfortable floats to your legs and arms depending on your natural buoyancy levels, and gently lay you back in the water, supporting your head. They will then perform a unique series of therapeutic stretches, massages and movements designed to help you to achieve the ultimate healing relaxation. By the end of your treatment you will feel lighter and more relaxed. Some customers even report having an emotional reaction, they find the experience so liberating and moving.
- Having your head cocooned in a soft flotation device while the therapist works on your feet and legs.
