There are three natural well-heads in the centre of Bath - the King's Spring, Cross Spring and Hetling Spring - with a cumulative flow of 1.25 million litres each day at a temperature of around 45° centigrade.
The popular theory regarding the source of the Hot Springs of Bath is that they are composed of water that fell as rain up to 10,000 years ago on the Somerset Mendip Hills, soaking through the earth's layers, and pushed up through faults in the limestone beneath Bath.
Extensive investigations, carried out as part of the Bath Spa Project, between 1997 - 2001 were unable to conclusively prove or disprove this theory.
