Thermae Bath Spa has been voted the best spa in a Daily Telegraph survey.

Thermae, which opened last August, beat five other world-renowned spas in the shortlist, including Champneys and the Banyan Tree in Phuket.

Managing Director of Thermae Bath Spa, Henk Verschuur, said: ‘This is really fantastic news. It is a great honour to be voted Best Spa and a great accolade to achieve in our first year. We at Thermae Bath Spa all know the Spa is really special, with its natural thermal waters and historic credentials. I am delighted that our customers and the Daily Telegraph readers agree with us.

He added: “I’d like to thank everyone in Bath who has supported us through what has been a difficult few years, and for all the local businesses and people who had faith in the idea of reviving spa culture in the city. We are proud of what has been achieved so far and are determined to resolve all the outstanding issues and make the Spa even better.”

Sponsored by Mastercard, the Ultimate Luxury Travel Related Awards (ULTRAs) recognize some of the world’s top travel destinations and resorts.

Staff from Thermae travelled to London for the awards ceremony at the Hotel Intercontinental London Park Lane on May 9th.

The readers of Ultratravel - the 500,000 circulation magazine published with The Daily Telegraph - have been voting in their thousands to choose their favourite travel suppliers in twenty categories. These categories include: Best Airline, Hotel, Tour

Operator, Cruise Company, Airport, Ski Resort and Holiday Destination.

More than 10,000 responses were received from a questionnaire which ran in the Ultratravel Magazine.

The top five in each category will form the Ultratravel100, to be published in Ultratravel on May 12th, and the twenty winners each received an ULTRA - the Ultimate Luxury Travel Related Award.

The most nominated spas, which will appear in the Ultratravel100 published on May 12th are:

Chewton Glen

Champneys

Chiva Som

Oberoi, Mauritius

The ULTRAs ceremony was attended by more than 500 people, including a number of celebrities who are ambassadors for CLIC Sargent, the children's cancer charity.

In the heart of the city of Bath, Thermae is a day Spa comprising new and historic buildings. It offers bathing in the natural thermal waters and a range of facilities designed to refresh the body and sooth the mind in a relaxed yet inspirational setting.

Thermae incorporates the New Royal Bath, the Hot and Cross Baths and the Spa Visitor Centre – a free-to-enter spa interpretation centre.

The project was funded by Bath & North East Somerset Council, the Millennium Commission, Thermae Development Company Ltd (UK), the Bath Spa Trust, the EU Regional Development Fund and local subscribers.
