Relaxation can prove to be elusive in this hectic modern world, but even the busiest individual can benefit by taking a few tips from expert relaxation-seekers– and nobody takes R&R as seriously as the ancient Romans once did.
The Romans nailed the art of relaxation, with entire spa towns – including Bath - established solely for the purpose of restorative bathing in natural thermal waters. Ancient Rome was the spa capital of Europe, and bathing was viewed as a vital, health-giving social activity.
Massage in particular is strongly entwined with the history of Bath, as it was considered very much a part of the ancient bathing experience. The Romans loved to smell good, and regularly used aromatic essential oils such as rose, frankincense and cedarwood in their massages.
It is very fitting then that one of Thermae Bath Spa’s most popular signature treatments is called ‘Roman Trilogy’: a luxury bespoke treatment created exclusively for us by British brand Aromatherapy Associates, which makes use of various nourishing essential oils – in particular rose and frankincense, as favoured by Romans.
The ‘Roman’ element of the treatment is a nod to the history of Bath and its ancient thermal waters which you can still bathe in today at Thermae Bath Spa. ‘Trilogy’ refers to the three component parts of the treatment (scrub, massage and facial), as well as the harmonising trios of essential oils used. It is no coincidence that three is traditionally seen as the most powerful number in aromatherapy, and that the triangle is the strongest shape.
What to expect from the Roman Trilogy treatment
Using high quality Aromatherapy Associates products, a therapist will transport your body through a trio of flowing treatments that systematically slough, knead and nourish your body from head to toe. This treatment is very comforting, and so is ideal for someone who just needs to unwind and feel looked after.
First the therapist will firmly brush your legs, arms, back and shoulders with a small body brush, then apply Aromatherapy Associates’ polishing salt and coffee body scrub, rubbing in sweeping circular motions. This process is then repeated on the front of your body. The scrub itself is a rich buttery mixture containing coffee (an effective stimulant known for reducing cellulite) and calming essential oils such as frankincense. Once you have been thoroughly scrubbed and softened, the therapist leaves the room while you wash off the salt and coffee residue in a private shower cubicle in the treatment room.
Next the therapist will massage your entire body with a comforting vanilla and ylang ylang essential oil and butter mixture, specially combined for optimal nourishing effect. The therapist especially targets areas of tension, allowing the body butter to penetrate deep into the skin. This flowing massage aims to rebalance the body, relax the muscles and hydrate the skin.
To complete the Roman Trilogy, the therapist will perform a revitalising three-step facial which uses uplifting rose and geranium essential oils to restore radiance and nourish the skin. If you have sensitive skin, the therapist may recommend alternative products. The purpose of this refreshing facial is to brighten, cleanse and pamper – and it’s topped off by a scalp massage while the replenishing mask sinks in.
By the time the trio of treatments is complete you will ultimately feel uplifted, comforted and renewed. Your therapist will advise you to let the oils stay on your skin for at least a few hours so that you see the maximum benefit, and to drink lots of water and take it very easy for the rest of the day.
